Getting started

This week we get our own work piece, it looks like a T shape as shown in the photo above.

First, Mr Teng demonstrated to us how to dress the grinding wheel. It is an important process in order to produce a flat and smooth surfaces on the work piece. Before placing the diamond, which is used to dress the grinding wheel on the magnetic table, the table and the diamond must be cleaned. This is because tiny dust and dirt can also cause the grinding wheel is not well dressed. Then, the magnetised switch was on to magnetise the diamond so that it will not fly out when dressing. The x-axis remain stationary and the y-axis moves forwards and backwards manually to dress the wheel. The work piece can only start to be ground after the grinding wheel had been dressed.

Similarly, Mr Teng did the same thing as when dressing the grinding wheel when grinding the work piece. But there is one thing different from dressing the wheel, that is when grinding a work piece, the x-axis was set into automatic mode, it moved continuously throughout the grinding process. After Mr Teng demonstrated all steps, it was our turn to use the machines. But I was soon confused by the difference between the dressing process and the grinding process. I set the x-axis into automatic mode when dressing the wheel. Luckily, Mr Teng discovered and stopped me before any accident happened.
